![]() How Intermittent Fasting Can Help You Live Healthier, Longer. By Dr. Mercola. In the featured documentary, Eat, Fast, and Live Longer,1 British author and journalist Dr. Michael Mosley documents his journey as he decides to try fasting, to see if it might improve his health. Mosley sets out to investigate his alternatives. When you're in constant . They would cycle through periods of feast and famine, and modern research shows this cycling produces a number of biochemical benefits. In short, by altering what and when you eat, you can rather dramatically alter how your body operates. And that's great news. But modern science has confirmed there are many good reasons for fasting, including the following: Normalizing your insulin and leptin sensitivity, and boosting mitochondrial energy efficiency: One of the primary mechanisms that makes intermittent fasting so beneficial for health is related to its impact on your insulin sensitivity. Insulin resistance, in turn, is a primary driver of chronic disease—from heart disease to cancer. HGH is also a fat- burning hormone, which helps explain why fasting is so effective for weight loss. Lowering triglyceride levels and improving other biomarkers of disease. Reducing oxidative stress: Fasting decreases the accumulation of oxidative radicals in the cell, and thereby prevents oxidative damage to cellular proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids associated with aging and disease There's also plenty of research showing that fasting has a beneficial impact on longevity in animals. There are a number of mechanisms contributing to this effect. Normalizing insulin sensitivity is a major one, but fasting also inhibits the m. TOR pathway, which plays an important part in driving the aging process. Since most of us are carrying excess fat we just can't seem to burn, this is a really important benefit. When sugar is not needed as a primary fuel, your body will also not crave it as much when your sugar stores run low. First, ketones are released as a byproduct of burning fat, and ketones (not glucose) are actually the preferred fuel for your brain. It also protects your brain cells from changes associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Mark Mattson, a senior investigator for the National Institute on Aging, suggests that alternate- day fasting (restricting your meal on fasting days to about 6. BDNF by anywhere from 5. The 5: 2 Intermittent Fasting Plan. Intermittent fasting is an umbrella term that covers a wide array of fasting schedules. As a general rule, it involves cutting calories in whole or in part, either a couple of days a week, every other day, or even daily. Mosley became so convinced of the health benefits of intermittent fasting he wrote a book on the subject, called The Fast Diet: Lose Weight, Stay Healthy, and Live Longer with the Simple Secret of Intermittent Fasting. The fasting schedule he ultimately suggests in the book (after trying a couple of variations in the film), is to eat normally for five days a week, and fast for two. This schedule is sometimes referred to as the . On fasting days, he recommends cutting your food down to one- fourth of your normal daily calories, or about 6. Mosley claims to have lost 1. This fasting protocol is exactly as it sounds: one day off, one day on. When you include sleeping time, the fast can end up being as long as 3. The drawback is that it requires you to go to bed with an empty stomach every other day, which can be tough for most people—at least initially. Krista Varady, author of The Every- Other- Day Diet: The Diet That Lets You Eat All You Want (Half the Time) and Keep the Weight Off, the alternate- day fasting schedule does have a much higher compliance rate than many other fasting schedules. In the end, the best fasting schedule is the one that you will comply with. If you're constantly cheating, it won't work. Varady's research shows that alternate- day fasting, where you consume about 5. Splitting the 5. 00 calorie meal up into multiple smaller meals throughout the day was not as successful as eating just one meal, once a day. The main problem relates to compliance. But when eating tiny amounts of food multiple times a day, you're far more inclined to want more, so the cheat rate dramatically increases. Download Interview Transcript. My Personal Recommendation. A third version of intermittent fasting, and the one I recommend and personally use, is to simply restrict your daily eating to a specific window of time, such as an eight hour window. I have experimented with different types of scheduled eating for the past three years, and this is my personal preference as it's really easy to comply with once your body has shifted over from burning sugar to burning fat as its primary fuel. And, if you're not hungry.. You do this every day until your insulin/leptin resistance improves (weight, blood pressure, cholesterol ratios, or diabetes normalizes). Then you continue to do it as often as you need to maintain your healthy state. I used a six hour window until I was burning fat for fuel, and now eat in a 9- 1. I rarely eat anything for four or more hours before going to bed. It really is beyond amazing to me how the food cravings literally disappear once you have regained your ability to burn fat for fuel. You don't need iron willpower or enormous levels of self- discipline to maintain this eating schedule. Yes, you will get hungry, but your hunger will be appropriate and you will be surprised at how much less food will completely satisfy you once you regain your metabolic flexibility and no longer need to rely on stored sugar in your body for your primary fuel. Krista Varady takes Dr. Mosley out for lunch at a local fast food restaurant, noting that it doesn't seem to matter what you eat on your non- fasting day, as long as you're fasting properly every other day. I would caution against versions of intermittent fasting that gives you free reign to eat all the junk food you want when not fasting, as this seems awfully counterproductive. ![]() Benzaclin Gel And Pregnancy How To Get Pregnant Using Natural Herbs Pregnant Can I Eat YogurtBenzaclin Gel And Pregnancy Trying To Get Pregnant At 40 Years Old. From my perspective, I simply cannot agree with or promote this idea. Your goal is to seek to emulate the eating patterns of your ancient ancestors, which was a constant feast and famine pattern. Besides, if alternating between feasting on junk food and fasting can produce favorable metabolic results as in the video, just imagine the health benefits you'd get if you were actually making healthy food choices each time you ate! Varady doesn't appreciate the dangers of processed foods and trans fats in particular. She focuses mostly on the quantity, not the quality, of the calories. A healthy diet includes minimizing non- starchy, carb- rich processed foods and replacing them with healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil, olives, butter, eggs, avocados, and nuts (macadamia are particularly beneficial, as they are high in fat and low in protein). I also recommend being moderate in your protein consumption, and making sure meat and other animal products like dairy and eggs come from organic, pasture- raised animals. He starts out his day with a supersized bowl of fruit, and even though he tosses out certain parts that are particularly high in fructose, I believe most people would be wise to refrain from excessively large amounts of fruit—at least until your weight and health has normalized. While a fruit- rich diet may work for some people, in the end you need to pay close attention to your metabolic parameters, and getting your vitamins and antioxidants from vegetables would be a more appropriate strategy for most. It typically takes several weeks to shift to burning fat as your primary fuel, but once you do, your cravings for unhealthy foods and carbs will automatically disappear. Again, this is because you're now actually able to burn your stored fat and don't have to rely on new fast- burning carbs for fuel. Once you are at your ideal body weight, and do not have diabetes, high blood pressure, or abnormal cholesterol levels, you can be less rigid with your fasting. However, it is probably best to resume some type of scheduled eating regimen once in a while, to make sure you don't slip back into old habits. People that would be best served to avoid fasting include those living with chronic stress (adrenal fatigue), and those with cortisol dysregulation. Pregnant or nursing mothers should also avoid fasting. Your baby needs plenty of nutrients, during and after birth, and there's no research supporting fasting during this important time. A diet with plenty of raw organic foods and foods high in healthy fats, coupled with high- quality proteins, will give your baby a head start on good health. You'll also want to be sure to include plenty of cultured and fermented foods to optimize your—and consequently your baby's—gut flora. For more information, please see this previous article that includes specific dietary recommendations for a healthy pregnancy, as well as my interview with Dr. Natasha Campbell- Mc. Bride. It's commonly associated with diabetes, but you can be hypoglycemic even if you're not diabetic. Common symptoms of a hypoglycemic crash include headache, weakness, tremors, irritability, and hunger. As your blood glucose levels continue to plummet, more severe symptoms can set in, such as: Confusion and/or abnormal behavior Visual disturbances, such as double vision and blurred vision Seizures. Loss of consciousness One of the keys to eliminating hypoglycemia is to eliminate sugars, especially fructose from your diet. It will also be helpful to eliminate grains, and replace them with higher amounts of quality proteins and healthy fats. You can use coconut oil to solve some of these issues as it is a rapidly metabolized fat that can substitute for sugar, and since it does not require insulin, it can be used during your fast. However, it will take some time for your blood sugar to normalize. ![]() ![]() Since November 1994, Scambusters.org has helped over eleven million people protect themselves from scams. Unfortunately most Doctors give out the same medication: Levothyroxine or Synthroid. Both of these medications contain the inactive thyroid hormone T4 and in order for it to be active in your body it must be converted to the active T3 thyroid hormone. And that's where the other thyroid medications come in.. Most patients do MUCH better on a combination of T4 AND T3, not just T4 medication alone. They have more energy, less hair loss and more weight loss. What to do if you have Hypothyroid Symptoms on Levothyroxine. So what should you do if you are taking levothyroxine or another T4 medication and your body temp is low, your heart rate is low and you are still symptomatic? Most problems from levothyroxine have to do with absorption. Usually a reduction in the absorption rate due to various factors. At best we absorb about 8. But this number rapidly reduces in the setting of GI related problems, inflammation, low stomach acid and other GI problems. Anyone who is suffering from constipation, gas/bloating, acid reflux, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gastric ulcers, low stomach acid, etc. This is complicated further by other medications and supplements which may further reduce thyroid hormone absorption if not taken at the correct time. So let's talk about how you can impact the absorption component and get more . Levothyroxine 5. 0mcg tablet. The 5. 0mcg tablet of Levothyroxine is better than other doses of levothyroxine. Why? Because each dose of levothyroxine is a different color and contains different inactive ingredients and fillers. These fillers act to cause symptoms by themselves (which can be confused with hypothyroid symptoms), but they also reduce absorption and the effectiveness of thyroid hormone in your body. This presents a unique opportunity where you can switch your current dose of Levothyroxine to 5. Let's say you are currently taking 1. Levothyroxine. You could easily switch to taking 3 of the 5. Levothyroxine which would be the same equivalent dose and get rid of all of the fillers/dyes in the process. Make sense? Something as simple as this change can actually improve how you are feeling. Even better is that most physicians won't have a problem with switching your dose (but they may put up resistance to switching your medication entirely). Consider switching to Tirosint. It's special because it has the fewest inactive ingredients out of all thyroid medications. It contains 3 inactive ingredients and 1 active ingredient (thyroid hormone). This makes Tirosint very easy to absorb. The good news is that Tirosint is another T4 only thyroid medication which means that your physician shouldn't put up much resistance to switching your medication. Like other forms of T4 thyroid medication the doses are equivalent. Meaning if you are taking 1. Levothyroxine you can switch to 1. Tirosint. You can read about all of the potential benefits of Tirosint in this comprehensive post. Increasing absorption of thyroid hormone + When to take your thyroid hormone medication. The first is to simply change the time of day that you can your thyroid medication. Studies have shown that taking your thyroid medication at night can actually increase serum thyroid levels. In the morning your GI tract is sped up which will limit absorption of thyroid hormone. At night your GI tract slows down which may allow for higher absorption. In addition your cortisol levels peak at 8am in the morning (when most patients take thyroid hormone) which may also influence thyroid hormone metabolism. The second option is to treat any GI related problem that may be limiting your absorption. By addressing conditions such as low stomach acid, SIBO/SIFO (very common in hypothyroid patients) and other GI related problems you can actually increase thyroid hormone absorption. The answer really depends on you, but I can help you figure it out.. Liothyronine or Cytomel both contain pure T3 medications and can simply be added to your current dose of Levothyroxine. So let's say you are taking 1. T4 and you aren't feeling well at all. Instead of switching to 1- 2 grains of NDT you can simply add 5- 2. That would make your dosing look like this: Levothyroxine 1. Liothyronine 1. 0mcg taken twice per day for a total of 2. Levothyroxine Dosage Chart and Comparison Table. So, what if your Doctor isn't willing to change medications or you really like being on Levothyroxine? Then make sure you are on the right dose! I usually recommend slowly increasing your dose of Levothyroxine by about 2. A good starting dose would be 2. I recommend using the 5. T3, free T4 and reverse T3 levels. If you have continued to increase your dose beyond 1. ANY improvement in your symptoms that is another sign that Levothyroxine may not be the best medication for you. If your Doctor still isn't willing to trial NDT or T3 containing medications then you can also try other forms of T4 with less fillers like Tirosint and continue increasing your dose slowly over time. I find that the conversion from T4 to NDT or natural desiccated thyroid to be too low (meaning you usually need more NDT to make it equivalent to the T4 dosing). How I start patients on Thyroid medication and how I use Levothyroxine in my Practice. So, yes I still use this medication but not often. The patients I've found that do best on T4 medications are those who are VERY sensitive to T3 containing medications, meaning they get palpitations or anxiety by taking it. Or those patients who are great at converting T4 to T3, so patients with very few other medical conditions. The vast majority of patients do much better on T3 containing medications. The average dose I have patients on is anywhere between 5. Recap + Final thoughts. Believe it or not your dose of Levothyroxine depends on multiple variables, all of which need to be considered to help reduce symptoms and help you feel better. Remember that Levothyroxine absorption plays a big role in how you may feel. By switching your dosage to 5. Levothyroxine or switching to Tirosint all together you may improve your thyroid hormones. Another option is to consider changing the time to day that you take thyroid hormone. Lastly, you should also consider treating any GI related problems that may be limiting your absorption as well. If these options fail then you might consider the addition of T3 containing thyroid medications. To get these medications you will need the assistance of a physician who is knowledgeable about thyroid function. Have you tried any other thyroid medication? Which worked well for you? Episode Title Written by Original air date; 301 "Series 3, Episode 1" Dave Cohen, Rosanna Lowe, Giles Pilbrow, Laurence Rickard, Colin Swash and Ben Ward. Common Statistical Terminology with Applications Like all profession, also statisticians have their own keywords and phrases to ease a precise communication. I would like to be fit and trim annd most. I did maintain for quite sometime but kept reverting every couple of months back to the programme which in hindsight hindered my stabilization of metabolism .. I came accross this page and seeing that it's fearly up to date, thought I'll add my experience with the diet. I went on the program 3 years ago at 1. Less than three months later I ended my re- feed on 8. Since then I dropped more wheight and at my lightest weighed 8. The first time I encountered gaining a bit was middle to end last year. I'm currently on 8. To combat this bit of gain I'm currently back for a few weeks and want to loose a bit more than origanaly. The secret to the diet in my opinion is the re- feed! Follow it by the book and listen to your body. Hope this answers a few questions. I wish people would understand that everyone has a unique body with a unique DNA- pattern. Cohen nowhere claims that he can change your DNA and therefore miraculously change the reasons why you picked up the weight in the first place. But he is a problemsolver, if you agree to follow this strategy to change your habits in following the advised blueprint to manage your health after you have lost the weight. Of course people will gain weight, if they start eating again in the way that made them fat or sick originally. If one wants to be reasonable, you will understand that most people are overweight due to wrong eating or lifestyle habits for their own particular body, DNA or condition. To say that you started eating . I personally had to understand that I was not borne with so- called ideal genes for being slender and healthy, should I eat like most . I had to understand that, should I want to be healthy as I can be, I need to make permanent changes and learn to live by them, to stay healthy. Just like somebody that discovered he or she suffers from diabetes, or such. My food is my medication in this case. In the end, one saves money! All the ailments that I suffered from before I was on this program and do not suffer from anymore, cost me a fortune, I do not need to run to doctors anymore. I am 4. 8 and lost 3. Not just because I am much thinner, but because I walk with a smile on my face and I HAVE ENERGY and feel so grateful to have my real body back again, as well as full body function. Nothing can taste as good as being healthy and slender feels. I will gladly adapt to the healthier choices, that is my decision. I have to understand that feeling good is my own decision, some people are born without a worry about eating . But he empowered me to manage my health as best as possible. He deserves that credit and may he be blessed for his help to those who really need and accept it. LOST 1. 6KG IN 1. WEEKS! THE ONLY DIEET THAT REALY WORKS. I didn't realise how much picking i used to do between meals. Even though ive always eaten healthy, this is teaching me about portion sizes and how much i should be eating. I was eating way to much. Still missing my chocolate and sweets but getting better every day. Ive lost 4. 5kgs so far and still have 9kgs to go. At 2. 31 lbs I had lapband surgery in Oct 2. I only got down to 2. I found this diet. My son in law lost 6. I was ready to try it. I have 1. 0 days left to my 1. I weigh 1. 68 and am in size 1. I have saved for years. My first goal is 1. I should really be. I just turned 6. 0 years old and feel that I have my life back. I should say that this diet does work. I'm 2. 5 years old and as far as I can remember I've always been overweight. I was 1. 06 at my heaviest and 4 months into the program, I've lost 2. I start my re- feeding. It works but you have to be very strict with yourself and it gets difficult trying to stop other people from feeding you. I still get lightheaded once or twice a week though and while I feel better, physical exertion makes the lightheadedness worse - particularly when you are due to eat. I think this is a great diet for people who are willing to change their lifestyles - but it's not easy at all. The best eating plan ever, I have struggled in the past with Kate Morgan and Jenny Craig, with this plan the food is delicious and the weight just falls off you, you have to stick with it 1. I needed to lose 2. Kilo to get to my goal weight of 5. Kilos, I did it in 1. I have been off it now 6 weeks and keep an eye on my weight as I would hate to put it back on, so far all is good not budged from 5. Kilo's and I am eating so well, healthy of course as it teaches you the good and bad foods. Highly recommended if you are committed 1. The end results are so rewarding. In 2. 00. 8 I have lost 2. Cohen diet. If you keep the right mindset, it works. But then some people told me to work out to get my body in an even better shape, and I did. Result: with sports too hungry and I started eating again. Later gained it all back plus more. Now it's 2. 01. 0 and I've found courage again to lose 4. This is my 3rd day! Well almost 3 weeks down and 8 kilos . Both myself and my hubby are doing it together which makes it alot easier. Don't get me wrong the 1st 3 or 4 days were hard , very hard but they didnt hide this fact . The reasoning behind The 1. Day Diet. This diet claims to use . By avoiding processed foods, sugars, and bad fats, you can improve your health and lose weight. The diet has 4 cycles. Cycle 1: Accelerate. This cycle claims to promote rapid weight loss by improving digestive health, helping clear sugar from the blood to boost fat- burning, and discourage fat storage. You follow this cycle for 1. If you reach your weight loss goal you move to cycle 4; if not you move to cycle 2. This cycle can also be used if you gain some weight back and want to quickly lose it. Cycle 2: Activate. This cycle claims to reset your metabolism through a strategy that involves increasing and decreasing your caloric consumption to stimulate fat- burning and to help prevent plateaus. It lasts 1. 7 days and consists of alternating between Accelerate days (see above) and Activate days, where you start to add natural starches. Cycle 3: Achieve. This cycle claims to help you develop good eating habits through the re- introduction of additional foods and move you closer to your weight goal. Some more carbs are allowed, and protein is cut down. At the end of cycle 3, if you have additional weight to lose, you can recycle back to cycle 1 then 2 then 3, or 2 then 3, or continue with 3 until you reach your goal weight. Cycle 4: Arrive. This cycle claims to keep you at your goal weight through a program of eating that lets you enjoy your favorite foods on weekends, while eating healthfully through the week. Monday breakfast through Friday lunch, eat with restrictions as described in cycles 1, 2, or 3. Friday dinner through Saturday night, eat your favorite foods and meals in moderation. ![]() There are some foods that you should always avoid on this diet, plus different foods to eat and avoid on each phase/cycle. All of the great content from the Tummywise site has now been incorporated in the California Dried Plums site. Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. Shahnazari M, Turner RT, Iwaniec UT, Wronski TJ, Li M, Ferruzzi MG, Nissenson RA, Halloran BP. S0. 95. 5- 2. 86. Building on previous work in which diets with dried plum (DP) were shown to increase bone volume and strength, the investigators studied DP in skeletally mature (6- month) and growing (1 and 2- month- old) C5. Bl/6 male mice. In adult mice, DP rapidly increased bone volume (+3. These changes were associated with decreased osteoclast surface (Oc. S/BS) and decreased serum CTX, a marker of bone resorption. Osteoblast surface (Ob. S/BS) and bone formation rate were also decreased suggesting that bone gain in adult mice is related to diminished bone resorption and formation, with resorption being reduced more than formation. There was also a decline in interleukins, TNF and MCP- 1, suggesting that dried plums’ effect on bone is in part through the immune system to suppress inflammatory activity and reduce the size of osteoclast precursor pool. Feeding dried plum resulted in an increase in plasma phenolics, some of which have been shown to stimulate bone accrual. At levels as low as 5% of the diet (w/w), DP increased bone volume in growing and young adult mice. At 2. 5% of the diet, bone volume was increased as much as 9. The investigators state that these data demonstrate that DP dramatically increases bone mass during growth. The Effect of Dried Plum on Serum Levels of Receptor Activator of NF- k. B Ligand, Osteoprotegerin and Sclerostin in Osteopenic Postmenopausal Women: A Randomised Controlled Trial. British Journal of Nutrition, April 2. Arjmandi. The mechanisms by which dried plums impart bone- protective properties remain unclear. Recent research has shown that osteocytes may control bone formation via the production of sclerostin and bone resorption via the receptor activator of NF- k. B ligand (RANKL) and its inhibitor osteoprotegerin (OPG). In this study, the researchers measured serum levels of RANKL, OPG and sclerostin in osteopenic postmenopausal women (n 1. Participants were randomly assigned to the treatment group of either 1. Previously reported in “Comparative Effects of Dried Plum and Dried Apple on Bone in Postmenopausal Women”). All participants received 5. Ca plus 4. 00 IU (1. D daily. Bone mineral densities (BMD) of the lumbar spine, forearm, hip and whole body were assessed at baseline and at the end of the study using dual- energy X- ray absorptiometry. Blood samples were collected at baseline and after 1. Dried plum significantly increased the BMD of the ulna and spine in comparison with the control group. In comparison with corresponding baseline values, dried plum increased the RANKL levels by only +1. Serum sclerostin levels were reduced by - 1. Although percentage changes did not reach statistical significance (P < 0. Dried Plum Diet Protects from Bone Loss Caused by Ionizing Radiation. Scientific Reports 6, Article number 2. Access the article at http: //www. Schreurs A- S, Shirazi- Fard Y, Shahnazari M, Alwood JS, Truong TA, Tahimic CGT, Limoli CL, Turner ND, Halloran B and Globus R. In the abstract, the authors state that bone loss caused by ionizing radiation is a potential health concern for radiotherapy patients, radiation workers and astronauts. In animal studies, exposure to ionizing radiation increases oxidative damage in skeletal tissues, and results in an imbalance in bone remodeling initiated by increased bone- resorbing osteoclasts. The researchers evaluated various candidate interventions with antioxidant or anti- inflammatory activities (antioxidant cocktail, dihydrolipoic acid, ibuprofen, dried plum) both for their ability to blunt the expression of resorption- related genes in marrow cells after irradiation with either gamma rays (photons, 2 Gy) or simulated space radiation (protons and heavy ions, 1 Gy) and to prevent bone loss. Dried plum was most effective in reducing the expression of genes related to bone resorption (Nfe. Rankl, Mcp. 1, Opg, TNF- . Thus, according to the authors, dietary supplementation with DP may prevent the skeletal effects of radiation exposures either in space or on Earth. Evidence for Anti- inflammatory and Antioxidative Properties of Dried Plum Polyphenols in Macrophage RAW 2. Cells. Food and Function (Food Funct). Hooshmand S, Kumar A, Zhang JY, Johnson SA, Chaid SC and Arjmandi BH. According to the abstract, the researchers investigated the anti- inflammatory and antioxidative properties of dried plum (Prunus domestica L.) polyphenols in macrophage RAW 2. They hypothesized that dried plum polyphenols have strong anti- inflammatory and antioxidant properties against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- induced production of the pro- inflammatory markers, nitric oxide (NO) and cyclooxygenase- 2 (COX- 2), and the lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde, in activated macrophage RAW 2. Macrophage RAW 2. Dried plum polyphenols at a dose of 1. Additionally, LPS- induced expression of COX- 2 was significantly (P < 0. To investigate the antioxidant activity of dried plum polyphenols, macrophage RAW 2. Dried plum polyphenols at a dose of 1. These findings indicate that dried plum polyphenols are potent anti- inflammatory and antioxidative agents in vitro. The investigators state that these cell culture findings cannot be directly extrapolated to in vivo conditions and that additional studies are needed to explore the bioactivity, metabolism, and tissue distribution and excretion mechanisms of dried plum polyphenols using an animal model of inflammation to confirm the findings. Effects of low dose of dried plum (5. Dina Metti, Pouneh Shamloufard, Amanda Cravinho, Paulina Delgado, Mark Kern, Bahram H. Arjmandi, Shirin Hooshmand April 2. The FASEB Journal vol. Supplement 7. 38. Our previous findings in osteopenic postmenopausal women indicated that daily consumption of 1. BMD), as well as improving indices of bone turnover. The objective of our current study was to examine whether 5. Forty Eight osteopenic women (6. All groups received 5. IU vitamin D as a daily supplement. Blood samples were collected at baseline, three and six months to assess biomarkers of bone turnover. Physical activity recall and three- day food records were obtained at baseline, three and six months to examine physical activity and dietary confounders as potential covariates. Both doses of dried plum were able to prevent the loss of BMD of the total body compared with that of the control group. Tartrate resistant acid phosphatase- 5b (TRAP- 5b, a marker of bone resorption) decreased at three months and six months in both dried plum groups. These results confirm the ability of dried plum in improving BMD in older postmenopausal women and suggest that lower doses of dried plum (i. Hence, our findings suggest that the consumption of a reasonable amount of dried plum is beneficial for older, osteopenic women. Comparative Effects of Dried Plum and Dried Apple on Bone in Postmenopausal Women. British Journal of Nutrition 2. Hooshmand S, Chai SC, Saadat RL, Payton ME, Brummel- Smith K and Arjmandi BH. This study examined the extent to which dried plum reverses bone loss in osteopenic postmenopausal women. Participants were 1- 1. Qualified participants (n 1. Participants also received 5. IU vitamin D daily. Bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar spine, forearm, hip and whole body was assessed at baseline and at the end of the study using dual- energy X- ray absorptiometry. Blood samples collected at baseline, 3,6, and 1. Physical activity recall and 1- week- food frequency questionnaires were obtained at baseline, 3,6, and 1. Dried plum significantly increased BMD of ulna and spine compared to dried apple. Compared to corresponding baseline values, only dried plum significantly decreased serum levels of bone turnover markers including bone- specific alkaline phosphatase and tartrate- resistant acid phosphatase- 5b. The authors maintain that the findings confirmed the ability of dried plum to imporve BMD in postmenopausal women in part due to suppressing the rate of bone turnover. This study compared the effects of dried plum on bone to other dried fruits (apple, apricot, grape or mango) and further explored the potential mechanisms of action by which dried plum may exert its osteoprotective effects. Adult osteopenic ovariectomized (OVX) mice were fed a control diet or diet supplemented with 2. Whole body and spine bone mineral density improved in mice fed the dried plum, apricot and grape diets compared to the OVX control; but only dried plum had an anabolic effect on trabecular bone in the vertebra and prevented bone loss in the tibia. Restoration of biomechanical properties occurred along with the changes in trabecular bone in the spine. According to the researchers, compared to other dried fruits in this study, dried plum was unique in its ability to down- regulate osteoclast differentiation while up- regulating osteoblast and glutathione activities. These alternations in bone metabolism and antioxidant status compared to other dried fruits provide some insight into dried plum’s unique effects on bone. Dried Plum Restores Bone in Aging Mice. J. 1. 0 1. 78. 1- 1. Halloran BP et al. Therapies to prevent or restore bone progessively lost with advancing age are limited. Previous studies suggest that dietary supplementation with dried plum (DP) can prevent bone loss due to estrogen deficiency. This study was undertaken to investigate whether dietary DP supplementation can prevent the loss of bone with aging and whether bone that has already been lost can be restored in an animal model. Adult (6 mo) and old (1. DP (0, 1. 5, and 2. DP by weight) for 6 mo. Micro. CT analysis and bone histomorphometry assessed bone volume, structure, and metabolic activity before, during, and after dietary supplementation. The researchers report that mice fed the 0% DP diet (control diet) lost bone, whereas both adult and old mice fed the 2. Veganism - Wikipedia. Veganism is both the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals. Dietary vegans (or strict vegetarians) refrain from consuming animal products, not only meat but also eggs, dairy products and other animal- derived substances. At first he used it to mean . More vegan stores opened, and vegan options became increasingly available in supermarkets and restaurants in many countries. In Massachusetts Amos Bronson Alcott, father of the novelist Louisa May Alcott, opened the Temple School in 1. Fruitlands in 1. 84. The Vegetarian Society .. Wheldon's No Animal Food: Two Essays and 1. Recipes, was published in London in 1. There were regular discussions about it in the Vegetarian Messenger; it appears from the correspondence pages that many opponents of veganism came from within the vegetarian community. This lent support to the vegan position, although Gandhi himself drank goat's milk. This became the predominant view of the Vegetarian Society, which in 1. When the request was turned down, Donald Watson, secretary of the Leicester branch, set up a new quarterly newsletter in November 1. They suggested allvega, neo- vegetarian, dairyban, vitan, benevore, sanivores and beaumangeur. Those in attendance were Donald Watson, Elsie B. Henderson, Alfred Hy Haffenden, Paul Spencer and Bernard Drake, with Mme Pataleewa (Barbara Moore, a Russian- British engineer) observing. Henderson, and Aids to a Vegan Diet for Children by Kathleen V. In 1. 94. 7 Watson wrote: . Jay Dinshah founded the American Vegan Society (AVS), linking veganism to the concept of ahimsa, . Mc. Dougall, Michael Greger and biochemist T. Colin Campbell, argued that diets based on animal fat and animal protein, such as the Western pattern diet, were detrimental to health. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease (1. Articles on veganism were viewed more during this period than articles on vegetarianism in the English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish Wikipedias.! Food declared that it had become . According to the latter, 7. Dietary vegans might use animal products in clothing (as leather, wool, and silk), toiletries and similar. Vegans reject the commodification of animals. Some of these are chemical compounds that can be derived from animal products, plants, or petrochemicals. Allantoin, lactic acid, retinol and squalene, for example, can be vegan. These products and their origins are not always included in the list of ingredients. They avoid certain vaccines; the flu vaccine, for example, is usually grown in hens' eggs, although an effective alternative, Flublok, is widely available in the United States. Non- vegan items acquired before they became vegan might be donated to charity or used until worn out. Some vegan clothes, in particular leather alternatives, are made of petroleum- based products, which has triggered criticism because of the environmental damage involved in their production. Ethical vegans avoid them on the premise that their production causes animal suffering and premature death. In egg production, most male chicks are culled because they do not lay eggs. Female calves are separated from their mothers within 2. Male calves are slaughtered at birth, sent for veal production, or reared for beef. Tofu comes in a variety of textures, depending on water content, from firm, medium firm, and extra firm for stews and stir- fries; to soft or silken for salad dressings, desserts, and shakes. Soy is also eaten in the form of tempeh and texturized vegetable protein (TVP); also known as textured soy protein (TSP), the latter is often used in pasta sauces. Almond milk is lower in dietary energy, carbohydrates and protein. Babies who are not breastfed may be fed commercial infant formula, normally based on cows' milk or soy. The latter is known as soy- based infant formula or SBIF. The recommendation is three or more servings a day of fruit (one of them high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruit, melon or strawberries); two or more of protein- rich legumes (such as soybeans, which can be consumed as soy milk, tofu or tempeh); five or more of whole grains (corn, barley, rice and wheat in products such as bread or cereal); and four or more of vegetables. My. Plate is divided into five groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products (or calcium- fortified soymilk), and protein. The protein includes meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts and seeds. A raw vegan diet includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain and legume sprouts, seeds and sea vegetables. There are many variations of the diet, including fruitarianism. Vegans obtain all their protein from plants, omnivores usually a third, and ovo- lacto vegetarians half. Combinations that contain high amounts of all the essential amino acids include rice and beans, corn and beans, and hummus and whole- wheat pita. A deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia and nerve damage. Vegetarians should thus take preventive measures to ensure adequate intake of this vitamin, including regular consumption of supplements containing B1. Plants not washed properly may contain B1. Animals obtain it by eating contaminated plants, other animals, or their own faeces, and become sources of B1. The mouth is another source, but in small amounts and possibly analogue (not biologically active). Tempeh, a fermented soybean food, is cited as another source, perhaps because of contamination during production. Ninety- nine percent of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. Plant sources include broccoli, turnip, bok choy and kale; the bioavailability of calcium in spinach is poor. The study found that vegans consuming at least 5. Without it bones can become thin and brittle; together with calcium it offers protection against osteoporosis. Vitamin D is produced in the body when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit the skin; outdoor exposure is needed because UVB radiation does not penetrate glass. It is present in salmon, tuna, mackerel and cod liver oil, with small amounts in cheese, egg yolks and beef liver, and in some mushrooms. People with little sun exposure may need supplements. The extent to which sun exposure is sufficient depends on the season, time of day, cloud and smog cover, skin melanin content, and whether sunscreen is worn. According to the National Institutes of Health, most people can obtain and store sufficient vitamin D from sunlight in the spring, summer and fall, even in the far north. They report that some researchers recommend 5. Tanning beds emitting 2. Cholecalciferol (D3) is synthesized in the skin after exposure to the sun, or consumed in the form of animal products; when produced industrially it is taken from lanolin in sheep's wool. Ergocalciferol (D2) is derived from ergosterol from UV- exposed mushrooms or yeast and is suitable for vegans. Conflicting studies have suggested that the two forms may or may not be bioequivalent. This is particularly true of anyone with hemochromatosis, a relatively common condition that can remain undiagnosed. Coffee and some herbal teas can inhibit iron absorption, as can spices that contain tannins (turmeric, coriander, chillies, and tamarind). The study concluded that there was no effect of vegan diets overall on all- cause mortality, cancer mortality, cerebrovascular disease or cardiovascular- disease- related mortality. The effects also disappeared when specific cancers were analysed. Vegans tend to be thinner, with lower serum cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Vegans might be at risk of low bone mineral density without supplements. They indicate that vegetarian diets may be more common among adolescents with eating disorders, but that its adoption may serve to camouflage a disorder rather than cause one. The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council similarly recognizes a well- planned vegan diet as viable for any age. Attention should be given to nutrient intake, particularly protein, vitamins B1. D, essential fatty acids, iron, zinc and calcium. Animal ingredients are ubiquitous because they are cheap. After animals are slaughtered for meat, the leftovers are put through the rendering process, and some of that material, particularly the fat, ends up in toiletries. Common ingredients include tallow in soap, and collagen- derived glycerine, used as a lubricant and humectant in many haircare products, moisturizers, shaving foams, soaps and toothpastes. Stearic acid is a common ingredient in face creams, shaving foam and shampoos; as with glycerine, it can be plant- based but is usually animal- derived. Lactic acid, an alpha- hydroxy acid derived from animal milk, is used in moisturizers, as is allantoin, from the comfrey plant or cows' urine, in shampoos, moisturizers and toothpaste. The British Vegan Society's sunflower logo and PETA's bunny logo mean the product is certified vegan, which includes no animal testing. The leaping- bunny logo signals no animal testing, but it might not be vegan. Its website contains a list of certified products. Most leather clothing is made from cows' and calves' skins, but the skin of sheep, goats, horses and pigs is also used. Less common skins include those from kangaroos, elephants, zebras, seals, crocodile and deer. Vegans regard the purchase of leather, particularly from cows, as financial support for the meat industry. Divisions within animal rights theory include the utilitarian, protectionist approach, which pursues improved conditions for animals, and rights- based abolitionism, which seeks to end human ownership of non- humans. Abolitionists argue that protectionism serves only to make the public feel that animal use can be morally unproblematic (the . The right of subjects- of- a- life not to be harmed can be overridden by other moral principles, but Regan argues that pleasure, convenience and the economic interests of farmers are not weighty enough. An experienced dietician can provide valuable advice and help create an individualized diet plan. Even modest weight loss can improve insulin resistance (the basic problem in type 2 diabetes) in people with pre- diabetes or diabetes who are overweight or obese. Physical activity, even without weight loss, is also very. But it is also important to monitor carbohydrate intake through carbohydrate counting, exchanges, or estimation. The glycemic index, which measures how quickly a carbohydrate- containing food raises blood sugar levels, may be a helpful addition to carbohydrate counting. According to the ADA, the most important component of a weight loss plan is not its dietary composition, but whether or not a person can stick with it. The ADA has found that both low- carb and low- fat diets work equally well, and patients may have a personal preference for one plan or the other. Patients with kidney problems need to limit their protein intake and should not replace carbohydrates with large amounts of protein foods. Insulin is a key regulator of the body's metabolism. It normally works in the following way: During and immediately after a meal, digestion breaks carbohydrates down into sugar molecules (of which glucose is one) and proteins into amino acids. ![]() Right after the meal, glucose and amino acids are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, and blood glucose levels rise sharply. Within 1. 0 minutes after a meal insulin rises to its peak level. Insulin then enables glucose to enter cells in the body, particularly muscle and liver cells. Here, insulin and other hormones direct whether glucose will be burned for energy or stored for future use. When insulin levels are high, the liver stops producing glucose and stores it in other forms until the body needs it again. As blood glucose levels reach their peak, the pancreas reduces the production of insulin. About 2 - 4 hours after a meal both blood glucose and insulin are at low levels, with insulin being slightly higher. The McDonalds Diet; 2000 Calorie Diet Plan; Calorie Needs of Children. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin. Onset is usually in childhood or adolescence. Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disorder. Patients with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin. Dietary control in type 1 diabetes is very important and focuses on balancing food intake with insulin intake and energy expenditure from physical exertion. Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for 9. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not respond normally to insulin, a condition known as insulin resistance. Over time, some patients also run out of insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the initial effect is usually an abnormal rise in blood sugar right after a meal (called postprandial hyperglycemia). Patients whose blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes, are considered to have pre- diabetes. It is very important that people with pre- diabetes control their weight to stop or delay the progression to diabetes. Obesity is common in patients with type 2 diabetes, and this condition appears to be related to insulin resistance. The primary dietary goal for overweight type 2 patients is weight loss and maintenance. 1800 Calorie Meal Plan (Dairy Free) Breakfast: Breakfast Sandwich: 1 oz. 1 whole wheat English muffin.![]() ![]() With regular exercise and diet modification programs, many people with type 2 diabetes can minimize or even avoid medications. Lifestyle interventions can be very effective in preventing or postponing the progression to diabetes. These interventions are especially important for overweight people. Even moderate weight loss can help reduce diabetes risk. The American Diabetes Association recommends that people at high risk for type 2 diabetes eat high- fiber (1. High intake of fiber, especially from whole grain cereals and breads, can help reduce type 2 diabetes risk. Patients who are diagnosed with diabetes need to be aware of their heart health nutrition and, in particular, controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. For people who have diabetes, the treatment goals for a diabetes diet are: Achieve near normal blood glucose levels. People with type 1 diabetes and people with type 2 diabetes who are taking insulin or oral medication must coordinate calorie intake with medication or insulin administration, exercise, and other variables to control blood glucose levels. Protect the heart and aim for healthy lipid (cholesterol and triglyceride) levels and control of blood pressure. Achieve reasonable weight. Overweight patients with type 2 diabetes who are not taking medication should aim for a diet that controls both weight and glucose. A reasonable weight is usually defined as what is achievable and sustainable, and helps achieve normal blood glucose levels. Children, pregnant women, and people recovering from illness should be sure to maintain adequate calories for health. Overall Guidelines. There is no such thing as a single diabetes diet. Patients should meet with a professional dietitian to plan an individualized diet within the general guidelines that takes into consideration their own health needs. For example, a patient with type 2 diabetes who is overweight and insulin- resistant may need to have a different carbohydrate- protein balance than a thin patient with type 1 diabetes in danger of kidney disease. Because regulating diabetes is an individual situation, everyone with this condition should get help from a dietary professional in selecting the diet best for them. Several good dietary methods are available to meet the goals described above. General dietary guidelines for diabetes recommend: Carbohydrates should provide 4. The type and amount of carbohydrate are both important. Best choices are vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains. These foods are also high in fiber. Patients with diabetes should monitor their carbohydrate intake either through carbohydrate counting or meal planning exchange lists. Fats should provide 2. Monounsaturated (such as olive, peanut, canola oils; and avocados and nuts) and omega- 3 polyunsaturated (such as fish, flaxseed oil, and walnuts) fats are the best types. Limit saturated fat (red meat, butter) to less than 7% of daily calories. Choose nonfat or low- fat dairy instead of whole milk products. Limit trans- fats (such as hydrogenated fat found in snack foods, fried foods, and commercially baked goods) to less than 1% of total calories. Protein should provide 1. Patients with kidney disease should limit protein intake to less than 1. Fish, soy, and poultry are better protein choices than red meat. Lose weight if body mass index (BMI) is 2. Several different dietary methods are available for controlling blood sugar in type 1 and insulin- dependent type 2 diabetes: Diabetic exchange lists (for maintaining a proper balance of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins throughout the day)Carbohydrate counting (for tracking the number of grams of carbohydrates consumed each day)Glycemic index (for tracking which carbohydrate foods increase blood sugar)Monitoring. Tests for Glucose Levels. Both low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) are of concern for patients who take insulin. It is important, therefore, to monitor blood glucose levels carefully. Patients should aim for the following measurements: Pre- meal glucose levels of 7. LPost- meal glucose levels of less than 1. LHemoglobin A1. C Test. Hemoglobin A1. C (also called Hb. A1c or HA1c) is measured periodically every 2 - 3 months, or at least twice a year, to determine the average blood- sugar level over the lifespan of the red blood cell. While fingerprick self- testing provides information on blood glucose for that day, the A1. C test shows how well blood sugar has been controlled over the period of several months. For most people with well- controlled diabetes, A1. C levels should be at around 7%. Other Tests. Other tests are needed periodically to determine potential complications of diabetes, such as high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and kidney problems. Such tests may also indicate whether current diet plans are helping the patient and whether changes should be made. Periodic urine tests for microalbuminuria and blood tests for creatinine can indicate a future risk for serious kidney disease. Other Factors Influencing Diet Maintenance. Food Labels. Every year thousands of new foods are introduced, many of them advertised as nutritionally beneficial. It is important for everyone, most especially people with diabetes, to be able to differentiate advertised claims from truth. Current food labels show the number of calories from fat, the amount of nutrients that are potentially harmful (fat, cholesterol, sodium, and sugars) as well as useful nutrients (fiber, carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins). Labels also show . This daily value is based on 2,0. Most people will need to recalculate the grams and calories listed on food labels to fit their own serving sizes and calorie needs. Weighing and Measuring. Weighing and measuring food is extremely important to get the correct number of daily calories. Along with measuring cups and spoons, choose a food scale that measures grams. Patients with diabetes should not skip meals, particularly if they are taking insulin. Skipping meals can upset the balance between food intake and insulin and also can lead to low blood sugar and even weight gain if the patient eats extra food to offset hunger and low blood sugar levels. The timing of meals is particularly important for people taking insulin: Patients should coordinate insulin administration with calorie intake. In general, they should eat three meals each day at regular intervals. Snacks are often necessary. Some doctors recommend a fast acting insulin (insulin lispro) before each meal and a longer (basal) insulin at night. Calories in Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Original Glazed Doughnut. Sample Menu Plans for 2. Calorie Diabetic Diet. There is no single 2. The American Diabetes Association recommends you meet with a registered dietitian to develop an individualized meal plan that meets your treatment goals and lifestyle. In following your meal plan, pay attention to portions of carbohydrate groups – these include starches, fruit and milk. These food groups have the biggest effect on your blood sugar. Individualize this menu by substituting one carbohydrate group for another. Keep the total carbohydrate servings to no more than four per meal. Memorize some basic portion sizes, especially for the carbohydrate groups. For example, one slice of bread; . For the fruit group, 1 medium fresh fruit; 1 c.
